I don't let them cry during the night. I have always wanted them to know that they were safe and that I would respond to their needs. To that end, I've been known to sleep on the floor next to the crate for a time.
I've always responded by getting them out and taking them to the potty pad. No playing, no talking and then taking them back to the crate. I don't let them potty inside the crate because that defeats the purpose of crate training.
