Usually the only reason they cry is because they don;t like being held down or because part of the ear gets pinched. My groomer tells me to pull out as much as you can (small amounts at a time) w/ your fingers, then with a really good light, and a steady hand she pulls the rest out with a pair of hemostats. you might need someone else to hold the dog while you do it. She told me that it is very rare that she has a dog object to this. Plus the hair in the ears helps to trap dirt and build up in the ears. i rarely (almost never) have to clean out my dogs ears when the hair is out. Also, 3 out of 4 of my dogs have very little and slow regrowth of the hair once it is plucked. My male on the other hand grows hair like a sasquatch!!!!
