I think most use both clippers and scissors. Clippers around the body and scissors for face and delicate areas. If you search for yorkie haircuts, you'll find a lot of great how to videos. Also, whenever I'm at petsmart, I found it helpful to watch the groomers to see how they handle cutting certain parts.

Your pup will probably get fussy and give you a hard time but you'll get used to it and learn how to handle him. I think it took me about 3-3:30 hrs when I first cut Magnus's hair... I'm getting better though and his cuts are looking more decent every time. Besides, I prefer doing it myself at home b/c I know he won't be crated, waiting for his turn. Also for my own peace of mind that there won't be anything harmful done to him.

Here's a picture of his cut from yesterday! It's not great but he doesn't look like a mop.
