I think they go off smell, my Zoe has a sister Lizzy who lives 5 miles away I take Zoe over for play dates they both go crazy over seeing each other. If my husband just goes over Lizzy follows him everywhere and when he picks her up she just looks at him with googly eyes. She can smell Zoe
