Unfortunately, it's not unheard of and it happens quite often. Last summer I heard in the news that a young woman left her golden retriever puppy in her car while she shopped at the Ontario Mills mall (huge outlet mall) for THREE HOURS. The dog died.
I actually don't have a problem with leaving a dog in the car for a few minutes if the AC is on. Uni loves the AC. We have no AC in the shop or at home, so she's actually more comfortable in the car.
