Angry Onsie conversion disaster / Need help sewing stretchy material !!

Ok thought I would give this a try and I did pretty good. I sat down put my thinking cap on and started the process.

1. Cut the onesie to length- check

2. Cut 2 layer skirt and hemmed - check
(first attempt at doing a single hemline)

3. Figured out how to attach the skirt to the onesie - check
(only took three tries before getting it right)

4. Put hem in onesie using stretch stitching - failure
(my machine must have been hungry because it kept eating the onesie)

* I used a stretch stitch, I tried three different ones. The straight stitch worked the best. So, I thought. Just when I though I was doing well and I was going to make it to the end this time, Nope my machine got hungry and ate the darn onesie again.

I tried sewing on the straight edge and that didn't work. Than tried turning under a hem line and sewing it, nope that didn't work either only make it worse. Ended up having to cut the bottom of it off and start again and nope, still messed it up.

It was like an episode of sewing machines from hell. Please Help, tell me what I'm doing wrong and how to correct it !
