Great advice above. I saw a flea for the first time in my life last year. My boys picked up a few at the park. We were not using any preventatives at the time, despite our vet's warning that it was a really bad year for fleas.
With hard work, we prevented getting infested.
We used regular dog shampoo and were generous with it lathering up the boys. Good tip to wet the head first and make a shampoo ring around the neck.
Vacuum every nook and cranny every day. That included the car for us because we drive daily to go walking. Fleas lay eggs quickly and new ones hatch in cycles. That is why it is important to keep vacuuming and washing even when you don't see any.
Wash beds/bedding and everything that can be washed as often as possible.
Every evening when we would return from the park, I would comb out my boys and hunt for fleas. I found one on each dog every night for about 2 weeks. To kill the fleas, I kept coconut oil within reach. Fleas are too hard to catch and the oil slows them down.
We haven't seen any this year. Crossing paws and fingers that we won't. Good luck!
