Embarassed Bailey's Nails Are Too Long. What to do?

We took Bailey to a groomer and she could not control him enough to trim his nails. You would think the world was ending. I took it on myself to work with him. He is pretty good with me but I found that even clipping a tiny little bit on a couple of nails caused him some pain (nerve) and some bleeding. I know all about the physiology and he will let me work with him, etc.

My question is: I think his nails are too long (I hear clicking as he walks across the floor.) How to get his nails shorter (gradually..weekly?) so they eventually are normal. It seems the blood vessel and nerve continue to grow as the nail does so if left untrimmed it becomes harder.

Any and all advice humbly accepted.

your friends,
Samc and Bailey
