After Ken passed I put hardwood floors in the kitchen, living room and dining room and halls. He hated wood floors. After I brought Nikki in my 3 girls decided they liked to pee on the carpets. I couldn't stand the smell in the house even with shampooing them regularly.
A friend and I ripped up all the flooring except the bedrooms. It was so gross to see all the pee stains.
I also replaced all the bedroom carpets with new carpet. I bought the newer carpet that pee beads up on and is odor resistant. I also bought a waterproof padding. It does seem to work.
The door to the 2 bedrooms that I don't use, are closed and the dogs are not allowed in there. They have access to 1/2 of my bedroom, the bed and the walk in closet. The carpet in those areas are covered with plastic. This is where their pee pads are as well.

They did have access to the rest of the house until recently. 2 of them started peeing on the wood floors! So now they are gated in my bedroom when I'm not home.
So I am so glad I went with wood since I can't seem to break them of their bad habits.

Ideally, I would like ceramic tile in my kitchen, bathrooms and halls and wood in living room, dining room and bedrooms. I didn't go with wood in my bedrooms because of cost but with my stinkers I wish I could have.
Here's a picture of my wood floors.
