You have to inflate the tires with air, but I only did once, right after I got the stroller two months ago, and haven't had to inflate the tires since. They are tubeless inflatable tires (no inner tube, just an inflatable outer tire), like most wheel barrows and riding lawn mowers. The inflatable tire is what gives the stroller a smooth ride--just be sure to inflate to the recommended pressure. I used a bicycle pump with a built-in pressure gauge.
