I can only imagine that your vet or a local shelter would love to have the donation of food. The fact that it is open may present a problem but if you donate to or through someone that knows you like your vet it should be fine.

I did not do this and know very little but my neighbor wrote to the dog food companies requesting samples for her dogs. Her dogs have health issues and were picky eaters. I believe most of the companies complied. My vet gave me some samples but only for the brand he carries which makes sense.
