There are special slow-feed bowls you can get that force dogs to eat more slowly.
And definitely teach him basic obedience and "Leave it!". You both will enjoy the training process and by the way, it goes on daily just about from now on. Dogs usually just love it. Keeps them out of a world of misbehavior when done with loving patience and pride in the dog's accomplishments and not about discipline. But just set boundaries and don't allow him to go past those without your intervening and standing him down if you must, though once he's trained, that so rarely happens you barely remember how to do it. An obedience, lovingly trained dog rarely acts out.
