The problem with using a detergent meant for the washing machine and not carpet is that while it will clean the carpet, it's impossible to rinse it out like you do in a wash machine and detergent left in the carpet will attract dirt fast and over time feel sticky. You also aren't really getting rid of the protein in urine which will cause them to return to the spot. It's best to use enzyme cleaners that destroy the protein and then use carpet cleaners meant for carpets. It will smell worse before it gets better. When you wet a dried pee spot it will smell, and it takes some time for the enzyme to destroy the protein, which is what causes the smell. Some enzyme cleaner have perfumes in them that temporary cover up the smell, but it's the enzyme that gets rid of the smell.
