First of all welcome to Yorkie Talk.
Wanting a mentor is great and much needed if you are planning on breeding . You can get tons of information from this forum but imo you are going to need someone to be by there side watching and learning everything you can. Find someone with as much experience as you can that will take you under their wing.
I had a mentor for about 5 years before I started my breeding program. Along with having a mentor I used the web for research and bought breeding books. I found lots of whelping videos on you tube. There is so much information and so much to learn. Even now I refresh my memory before a whelp. I also couldn't do it without my husband there to help me if needed. A breech birth, a large puppy, dead puppy, are just a few of the problems that could and do happen. You need to know how to revive a puppy. There is so much to learn. Breeding is not easy. It is a downright nightmare at times. You really need to have money put away for emergences because they will come up.
You must know the AKC standards so you can find the best breeding stock you can afford.
So those are just a few of my thoughts. The people who say you don't make money breeding are so right. If you love the breed and are willing to put your time and money into it then in the end it will be worth it, not money wise but by having little yorkies at your feet, running through the house. Nothing better..well almost nothing, my grandchildren I couldn't do without them! One more thing, I wanted to breed way before I did. I knew that I would not be able to work and be a breeder. You need to be able to be with your yorkies. So once I retired I had already had my mentor and was ready to begin my breeding program.
Good luck. I hope you can find a mentor close to where you live.
