| I do not watch the cooking channel, so I was never a fan of Paula Deen. When I saw her on TV talk shows, I perceived her as a sweet and funny Southern woman that liked to cook fattening dishes. Now my perception of her has changed after reading about why her contract was not renewed with the cooking channel. To me, Paula Dean is the type of women that romanticized and probably would have enjoyed the Southern plantation lifestyle before the Civil War. The times have changed. Today most brands and companies strive to be perceived as inclusive to the public. She was bad press for the cooking channel, so the cooking channel decided to part ways. I do not like the idea that Paula felt comfortable freely using the n-word, but I’m more astound that she loved the idea of a plantation theme wedding with black people, functioning as slaves, serving the guest. Nobody should use the n-word because of the history of the word. I have heard many racial groups used derogative words towards their people, but every sane person knows that outsiders should not use those words unless they want to instigate a fight. Most of the people I heard using the n-word are entertainers and not every day black folks. |
