I had to hand feed Max his first year. He performed sits for each piece of kibble. I sped things up by playing a "kibble in the Kong" game. You can buy Kongs at pet stores and Target. I have to use the black "Extreme" Kong for my heavy chewers.
Max is now a chow hound and eats on his own.
