It's the ingredient used in Sentinel that breaks the life cycle of fleas. If fleas get on the pup, they are not able to reproduce. (Sentinel also prevents heartworm, but hopefully he is already getting something monthly for that, which is why I'm suggesting to use only the component for flea treatment).
