They should go in for a yearly check up, stool sample, and blood work. The blood work should check for any tick transmitted illnesses, heart worms and any other thing your vet feels is important. If you don't do this regularly when your dog gets sick then you will have nothing to compare blood work to and such. Plus there are dogs who you think are perfectly healthy that aren't and the blood work could show up a problem before the dog starts showing symptoms.
