If it's itching, which P-Nut's wound after the FHO surgery was doing, the vet let me put some spray hydrocortisone on it. With that and the soft collar we had, there were no problems with him tearing sutures, etc. Maybe you could check with your vet about the spray (I wouldn't just do it without asking, in other words).
