Default Playing too rough with other pets

I just wondered if anyone had experience with a very hyper puppy and an older fur baby. My very laid back Himalayan cat is almost 10 years old and my Lilly is 7 months old now. She isn't trying to be mean to the cat, but she jumps on her and chases her and if my cat just gives up and lies down and tries to take it Lilly jumps on her head and gnaws at her feet and legs. I know she's just playing but my cat is rather elderly. I hate that I have to keep them separated, though I know that may be the only way to handle it currently Anyone have any ideas? The other day I heard an awful noise while I was trying to just let them play, leaving plenty of places for my cat to hide and get away but she doesn't move that fast anymore and I went to look and Lilly had knocked the wind out of my cat and she was gasping so I had to separate them again.
I thought about adding another small dog for Lilly to play with, but not sure if that would just make double the trouble for my poor cat.
Any help or suggestions are appreciated!
