I do think it depends on the dogs personality. Haley, my shy girl, reacted as though she was frightened initially. So, rather than reinforce her fear, I made sure she was not close by when I used it around Miss P. I set up the situations. Had my grandson knock, after Haley was upstairs. Haley honestly only took one short burst of the can and she hasn't done her annoying bark again. She now comes to the door all happy, but with no barking. P still yips, but stops with correction. Both get rewarded by the "guest" at the door with yummy beef treats and ear rubs. It's surprising how willing they are to learn.
