Default Paw

I had this issue with my boy, he kept licking one paw only. I washed it and looked but could not see anything. When he had his dental last week, i asked the vet to look carefully at his paw. He found some black road tar under the quick of one nail and it got infected? He cleaned it out and the dental antibiotics did the rest.
That is just what happened here, but it could be allergies or??
