I am sure they served a pretty good purpose in the past but have evolved to not being necessary. As with humans...we don't need our appendix, but at one time we did. Kind of like that.
I think the front and back dewclaws must be individual cases to each dog. I hear most problems with back dewclaws, but the ones that were a hazard on Shelby were his front ones. He still has his back ones.
