We had a recent discussion about this. I am against cutting the whiskers because they serve as a sensory device for them. I just comb the mustache with a wide tooth comb first and then gently with a mustache comb (careful not to tug the whiskers).

I'll see if I can find that thread - it had some very helpful articles.
