Once I get my mind wrapped around to what just happened after being jolted awake...I tell him "Enzo quiet, its just Krysten" He'll growl a few more times, or make that quiet "woof, woof" noise and just as he's finally settled and us back to sleep, the other kid comes home, and we start all over

If he's still adjusting to your home, he's unsure of many things and once settled in, a dog will bark at a lot of things trying to be a protector that in time they will begin to accept as part of the daily routine. Just acknowledge his alerting you if you want(I do that because I want a watchdog mentality in Tibbe) and then tell him "no" or "enough" or "quiet" and place your hand on his head to let him know he can lower it back down. In time he will sense that your "no" is coming and stop his own barking, at which time you can say "good boy", smile and give him a little scratch behind his ear. Still further down the road, he'll likely just raise his head and put it right back down as he realizes that this is no big deal in your home. A little scratch will tell him he's done the right thing not to bark and settle right back down. Just give him some time, stop the behavior you don't want and reinforce the behavior you want and he'll begin to know how to react as you wish.
