My DH also works shift work so I understand your situation. In our case however he is the one who can fall asleep at the drop of a hat and I am the one left awake for what seems like an eternity.
Our kids are grown and moved out but we like to sleep with the windows open, especially with this wonderful 60 degree weather we are having. We live on one of the main streets in town (Main St. literally) and Princess Sophie will bark/growl and prowl the bed when she hears things going on outside.
What I have started doing is when she alert barks/growls, etc., I reach for her and pet her back softly and whisper calmly to her to tell her that "it's ok" and now, she may utter a low growl (always has to have the last word) but she quickly settles down and we can all go back to sleep.
I don't know if this will help you and possibly you have already tried this or something like it but I do hope things get better for you and your DH!!! Blessings!
