Confused issue in my house

OK, I have a married son that lives with us. They have two mix breed dogs. The youngest a Queensland mix, is one years old. She has serious anxiety, seperation issues. So they want to crate her every time they go to work everyday. Anywhere between 4-8 hours a day. Because of her chewing on things, they think this will help prevent it. I don't agree, I don't believe crating a dog that long every day is humane. For potty training when a pup is fine, but for those reasons, I have to disagree. What does everyone else feel about crating to fix this problem?
