Instead of cutting off his puppy coat, you can snip the ends with scissors once a week or every two weeks.
For feet, I stand my boys on a countertop and use scissors to cut the hair around the foot in a circle. I cut it short enough so that it can't wrap under the foot. Then I use a mustache trimmer to shave in between the paw pads.
My boys didn't have much hair underneath beyond their chest area until fairly recently. I have started using the mustache trimmer to trim above their boy parts. They have a "pee string" that I keep clipped at 1/4 inch. For rear ends, I use scissors very, very carefully.
