Blazer ended up learning to ring the bell on his own. Just after Thanksgiving last year I decorated for Christmas and hung a jingle bell door hanger on the front door. It automatically jangled when ever I opened the door to bring him out for potty and suddenly one day he just jingled them on his own! Later I found a single jingle bell on a satin cord to hang from the knob and he is a faithful user of that. I do end up letting him out for play time instead of potty breaks sometimes but he isn't doing it for treats, he just loves being outside! I also bring his bell with us when we go to my parent's house and ring it to show him which door it is on and he uses it every time after that. It's funny, when he started ringing the bell it wasn't just for him to go out- he rang it when our old, big dog needed to go out, too!
