Both my groomer and my vet offer boarding, and since my groomer lives in a double-wide next to their building, I could probably take him there in a pinch, even after hours, maybe. I have boarded with my vet before and they take the little ones out & give them attention, but he still got diarrhea and didn't eat both times he was boarded there. A neighbor could come feed and let him out if you had someone you would trust with a key, in case you left and weren't able to get back home due to an emergency. A situation like you just went through makes one think of the available options...
