Oh, that is heartbreaking! I don't know how people can do the things they do.
As far as the punishment fitting the crime is concerned, I'm afraid I would be more strict in the punishment of anyone abusing a helpless, defenseless domestic animal. 350 hours is a drop in the bucket. Three years probation? It doesn't mean a lot in today's society and I'm guessing it won't be strictly enforced.
