I agree that having him on a leash would be best for now. You can also walk him close to the fence while on a leash and correct him if he starts barking. Until he gets well it would probably be best to just keep him away from the fence. Perhaps you can setup a small exercise pen near your back door so he can be confined to that while you are outside.
