I would work on teaching him sit right away. Once he has mastered the command(sit is pretty easy to learn). Make him sit and to stay in a sit position while you put his food dish down. That helps teach him respect. I taught Bentley to sit while I put his moist food down and now, unless he is really hyper at that moment as soon as he sees me coming with the bowl he will sit down right where he is standing.
Indoor fetch is a god send. If he has a good toy drive have at it till the tongue hangs out. This is our usual routine for the evening. Usually about 7 or so I sit down in the hall and start throwing the ball into the living room. We do this until he is tuckered out. As young as he is, it will probably be just about 5 minutes or even less. Endurance will build as he gets older. When Bentley brings me the toy and lays against my leg and just quietly chews on it, I know he's done. I say it's time for bed and he's ready to go lay down next to my desk until I'm ready to go to bed a few hours later.
