I guess the point is do what works best for your little guy, talk to your vet and research here. As to food, most vets are not "nutritionest" and they often sell food, that does not mean the food they sell is the best. IMO look at pest best for "human" grade food.. no corn.

Most vets I have been to suggested it for puppies especially small breed pups. We have always free feed the dogs we had when I was growing up and never had problems with them losing interest in food. I would never keep a dog or puppy from food simply because it might make it harder for the human to potty train it seems kinda wrong. We as humans have a voice to say I am hungry and dogs don't. I could not imagine only getting food at certain times and possibly being hungry at other times.
