My understanding is green is infection. If it were yellow, I would think allergies, but I would still go to the vet with any thick discharge that isn't white or clear. Any redness in the white of the eye, I would also see the vet.
I stopped using sterile saline (even the preservative free) in Max's eyes because something in it always irritated his eyes and caused green goopy discharge/infection.
