my vet said to be careful about free feeding yorkies, they become disinterested in the food and won't eat. He also pointed out if you free feed and have more then one pup it is hard to know what they eat. Also free feeding makes it harder to potty train.
I guess the point is do what works best for your little guy, talk to your vet and research here. As to food, most vets are not "nutritionest" and they often sell food, that does not mean the food they sell is the best. IMO look at pest best for "human" grade food.. no corn.
