I'll be happy to help any way I can.

Lane was estimated to be 2 or 3 when we rescued her. It's been about 4.5 (wow - can't believe it) years now. The biggest help was Rory (my other pup), who really taught her everything about how to be a dog. She always looks to her for guidance in strange situations, but she trusts us now.
It's really normal for them to want to hang out in their crates. As sad as it is to think about, it's all they knew for so many years, which is why it's comforting to them. It hasn't happened recently, but sometimes Lane would just start pacing and freaking out, I could just tell, and I'd put her in her carrier, so the smallest space possible and she'd calm down and be very content in there. I still don't know what set her off. Once it was after pest control had sprayed our unit while we were out. It was crazy. Someone said it could have been like PTSD from the scent.
There are some great links about rehabbing a puppy mill dog. Let me see if I can find them.
