IF your older dog has a gentle personality and seems to get along, it might do her good. I know that my mom's dog is 12 and usually he is pretty layed back and acts his age, but when Annabelle comes he acts like a puppy again. It seems to lift his spirits. IF you are choosing between male and female I would pick male. Females who are in the home the longest tend to like to be the only one, or at least like it better when there aren't a lot of other females around. They are usually more excepting of the opposite sex. That isn't always the case though. Good luck.
