I think there is a difference is being right with the dog when "dragging a leash" and just letting them "run free". So we maybe looking that the op questions from two different angles.
I can say there have been times when on the solid leach I have had a pup get away from me (I droped the leash etc) and i was very happy when I could step on the dragging leash and catch them fast. On the retractable ones if I drop it usually hits them and they lay down... they see me freaking out and stop!!!
lol... I should add... I walk four (yes 4!!!) dogs
