Can't you just click to have your computer go past the current selection of photos to wherever else you have them stores using the Windows back button feature to get the window to take you elsewhere to browse? It sounds as if the update might have caused your system to not bring up the usual location you are used to seeing but by clicking the up arrow at the top of the window that is brought up, you should be able to navigate to another picture file section in your computer. I also had auto updates on my IE 10 yesterday with a cumulative security pack and I too love the auto work correction but didn't know where it came from.
