A few years ago, I posted on another forum and a person who had an OOPS breeding involved every member (I think) in helping her with the litter of 4 puppies. Long story to that but the point here is, the mom developed Canine mastitis when the puppies were 2-4 days old. First one nipple became red, inflammed and sore and hard. The vet diagnosed and I think, started amoxycillen. The nipples began to be infected one by one and not one nipple could be used for nursing. The hooman put onesy's on the mom, wrapped her, tube-sox and every thing to keep the pups away from the milk. The milk is infectous it seems.
All the puppies survived but one had a cleft lip and all stayed in the family or went to friends, I think. Humans had to get up every 2 hours and feed the babies, let mom lick to pee and poop them and spend some time with them. That went on til the babies were weaned. |
