Hello, and welcome to YorkieTalk! I have three puppies and getting them to sit still so I can clip their nails is a real work out, so I can relate!

A few things crossed my mind when reading your post but I'm going to suggest trying this first; obedience classes. If you and Austin could start fresh, enroll in an obedience class, then perhaps both of you could renew confidence in other, and dealing with these issues won't be so disruptive in the ebb and flow of family life together.
