Mine have not been shaved at all for surgery. Some vet offices go overboard in my opinion shaving hair. Some will shave the leg to put in an IV. The explanation I've read here is that in case of an emergency, it is easier to find a vein. I still don't agree. Maybe on some dogs, but my boys legs' are easy to work on -- like when they draw blood.
