I think while we should be protective of them, however, we do have to let them be dogs. Brandi and I walk everyday (weather permitting). She loves being outside sniffing, running and playing in the grass. They are dogs and as much as we want to humanize them, they will never be humans.

We just have to do our due diligence and ensure that they are safe. The other I want to mention is because I take Brandi out everyday, she knows our neighborhood and how to get home from certain points. She actually got out of the house one time. It was at least a half-hour before I even noticed it. I was having work being done on my house and was talking to one of the contractors.

Of course when I panicked and went to look for her as soon as I called her name she came running. She didn't go very far. I was lucky but I believe because she knows her neighbhorhood, and the fact that she is not allowed to cross the streets unless I say so may have help to save her life and contributed to her not going to far away from the house.
