Well for what it is worth -- The therapy was very helpful in Barney's case.

As Linda said, the anesthetics are so safe today. But, if the hunch is that this isn't a partial tear but a stretched ligament then perhaps conservative rest would work out.

I rested Barney after his first surgery and made a huge mistake in over confining him. It took months of therapy to recover from that.

The other thing that I did that was very helpful was place cheap yoga mats from the dollar store on my tile and wood floors. The traction really helped him to not stress that joint.
