Two of my dogs have similar episodes that sound like gagging, and it happens when they get startled or over excited, although there are other causes. It is a minor spasm condition, and usually stops on it's own within less than a minute. Only a vet can tell you for sure. Here are some links to info about reverse sneezing, in case it is helpful.

Thank you! That's what he's doing it lasts not even a minute and its not frequent or long like kennel cough and he's only done it in the car and then when he was swamped by 3 munchkins he has a vet appt in 4 days for his next shots. If it gets worse though she's taking him sooner.
