I'm excited for you! We did a combination of both -- reassuring Max that he was top dog (because it suits his personality), and letting the guys work things out among themselves. Max comes first, but at the same time, he will let Teddy push him away from his food and water bowls, and things like that.
I think you will be pleasantly surprised how naturally everything falls into place.
