Amount of calories depends on each dog's activity level. More active dogs and growing pups will require more than older couch potatoes. Whatever you feed, start with the amount recommended to feed listed on the can or bag. If your pup feels thin, increase the amount gradually, or you can add treats to bump up the amount of calories.

In general, canned food is more nutritious than dry kibble, so to put on weight, I would include canned in the diet.

A vet check would be wise, to rule out anything medical going on preventing appropriate weight gain. I would start there, as your vet may be able to make recommendations on how to safely get him to put on some weight.
