My vet prescribed Revolution, which controls fleas, ticks, and heartworm. They are drops you apply once monthly between the shoulder blades. My Bella was recommended Revolution because it can be given to puppies (Bella weighs only 3 pounds), but there are other brands you can apply to larger Yorkies and adults.
