The vet should have taken a swab of the discharge in the ear and looked under a microscope. They look like little bugs under one (parasites). If they are ear mites treament can be lengthy. Do you have any indoor/outdoor cats? Sometimes they carry them. Well I'm sure you'll get more replies and help.
